Ihmisten Itäharju: Kävelypainotteinen jatke Turun keskustalle

The objective of this design focused master's thesis is the master plan for the Itäharju industrial area located in Turku, Finland. In the future the area is changing into a city centre like environment and the goal of the master plan is to propose a human centric and car free solution to be used as an aid in the city planning of the area. The language of the master's thesis is Finnish. The master's thesis was done as a commission for the city of Turku, but no preconditions for the content were set by the city officials, apart from a few existing conditions that affect design. A literacy study was conducted about the megatrends that touch the thesis's subject. On top of this, the history of the area has been studied mainly with the help of a map analysis, former plans regarding the area have been studied, the existing built environment has been valued and several field studies have been carried out in the area. The written part is divided into four sections. In the first part the background conditions are examined on a global scale. In the second part the history and plans of Itäharju area are examined. In the third part the preconditions and goals of the master plan are laid out and the need for this design is argued. The fourth section comprises of the master plan and is divided into two sub-sections: the district level and the city block level. In the master plan a city centre like mixed development environment is proposed for Itäharju. The land use of the area is based around the upcoming light rail line and is pedestrian focused. Private car through traffic is banned and the amount of streets built for private car use is minimized with the help of a perimeter arterial street and centralized parking solutions. Built area is dense and mostly of human scale. Special attention is paid to preserve the existing nature and maximize the amount of green areas and public spaces. A total of 1 000 950 gross floor area is designated to the design area, which means about 20 000 new inhabitants and thousands of work places. At the end of the section 4 the design principles are tested in a smaller scale in one example city block. Attached to the end of the thesis are certain detailed diagrams. The thesis can be used by the City of Turku as a basis for the upcoming city planning of the Itäharju area as an alternative solution to the 2017 master plan made by external consultants.
