The ways of working have been recently changing due to the growth of remote working. The same phenomenon exists also in the field of volunteer work. According to the commissioner of this thesis, Livekirkko ry, the number of volunteers has grown strongly during past years but there have not been enough resources to coordinate the work done by volunteers. The research problem was defined on how to lead and support, and to maintain the well-being and of the volunteers given that all the work is done in a remote environment. The theory basis of the thesis consisted of literature and scientific articles on volunteer and remote work.

The material for the study was collected by interviewing the volunteers of Livekirkko ry, to get indication on what kind of reasons the volunteers have to do volunteer work, how they are experiencing the remote environment, and what kind of expectations and wishes they have specifically for the volunteer operations of Livekirkko ry.

The results of the study showed three points: communication, rewarding and trust. The commissioner of the study Livekirkko ry can use the results to support the long-term development of volunteer work. In general, the results can also be utilized in other areas of the remote operating environment containing volunteer work.
