The purpose of this thesis is to study if the use of a teaching aid increases upholstery student´s knowledge of fasteners. Additionally, the thesis introduces different fastening solutions used in upholstery. The teaching aid was planned at Turku University of Applied Sciences as a part of product development studies. It was implemented in upholstery studies for the students of TAO, Turun Ammattiopistosäätiö.

For this study, students filled questionnaires before and after using the teaching aid, about their knowledge of upholstery fasteners. Interviews were also conducted with three different wholesale stores to gain an overview of the availability of different fasteners. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the teaching aid improved student´s knowledge of upholstery fasteners. In addition to the study, a teaching booklet was developed. A table of wholesale stores supply of fasteners was also produced, and it is attached to this thesis as an appendix. The teaching aid has proven to be versatile in teaching and its use has also contributed to the recycling and savings of material. It will be used as a part of upholstery education in TAO in the future as well.
