The relative amount of older adults has been growing, and because of that libraries must pay attention to how to serve those patrons. Promoting older adults’ information retrieval skills is one way to prevent social exclusion, and libraries can have an important role in it. Libraries have a significant role in narrowing the digital divide by providing free of charge access to computers and the internet. Libraries can also give guidance in using them. The thesis was commissioned by Salo main library. The aim of the study is to give the library information on their older adult patrons’ information habits and needs. Another aim of this thesis is to examine what older adults think about their information retrieval skills and how well the main library of Salo serves these patrons in their information service. The interviews were conducted during June in 2013 and there were a total of 27 participants. All participants were pensioners. The participants were satisfied with the library services of Salo main library and they reported that they could usually find the information they needed. The participants searched information for example about hobbies and well-being. The most commonly used information sources were the library, books, the internet and other people. All modes of information practices could be found in participants’ information retrieval, and non-directed monitoring was the most used mode of information practices. The participants used the library actively and the most frequently used services included borrowing, reading newspapers and magazines and information service. Approximately one third of the participants wished that the library would arrange courses in for example information seeking. Salo main library could serve older adult patrons better in their information seeking for example by providing courses in information seeking. The study could be widened to concern a larger group of older adults to gain broader knowledge of older adults’ information seeking methods and their needs concerning it could be studied. Salo main library can use the results of this study for example to develop their services for older adults.
