Mediaa metsäpolulla -toimintavihko : median ja luonnon yhdistäminen alle kolmevuotiaiden varhaiskasvatuksessa

The purpose of this development work was to create practical activities for media education of children under the age of three and thus support their early childhood educators. These practical activities were to be turned into a booklet, which the early childhood educator could bring along on their group's trips to the forest and which gives ideas for diverse, pedagogical use of the groups tablet device. This development work was commissioned by a kindergarten specialicing in nature based pedagogy, and the development work was carried out in partnership with this kindergarten during the year 2021. The development work focused on a single group of children, comprising of 12 children around the age of two. The focus group's early childhood education team included two nursery nurses and one kindergarten teacher. The theoretical base of this development work and the final product consists of research literature, articles and other publications on the growth, development and pedagogy of children under three years of age, as well as on their media education and relationship with nature. Methods used in the development work included experimental activity, participatory observation and dialogue. Participation in the everyday life of the focus group's children and the early childhood education team was an important part of the process in all of it's stages. The product of this development work is the Mediaa metsäpolulla (Media on the Forest Path) booklet, which includes five different practical activities and ways to use a tablet during forest excursions, designed for children under the age of three. In these activities a child experiences, produces and interprets media, while also gaining meaningful nature experiences. The booklet also contains ideas for practising pedagogical documentation together with the child. Key to the booklet is child participation, learning through joy and the close interaction between child, early childhood educator and nature.
