Workplace bullying is a common problem in today’s work communities. Being bullied is a serious crisis and has a negative impact on many different areas of well-being. It is not just a problem of the bullied person, but the situation is reflected in the functioning of the entire work community and the prevailing atmosphere in the workplace. Everyone should have the right to work without fear of falling victim to a bully.

The purpose of our thesis was to conduct a survey on the workplace bullying and the manifestations of it in one of the Finnish come care units in Southwest Finland. The aim was to provide the client with information about the occurence of bullying and to find ways to support its reduction in the work community.

The material of our survey was collected in April 2020 using the electronic Webropol form. Questionnaires and their analysis were used as research methods. We received permission from Raija Tuovinen to use and modify the questionnaire she had previously created. The survey was answered anonymously. Supervisors sent a cover letter and a questionnaire link to all employees simultaneously, and responses came directly to the researchers. at no point did the researchers become aware out the identities of the respondents. The target group of our study was homecare supervisors and nurses (n = 63).

The response rate of study was 21, so the results could not be directly generalized to the entire nursing staff, but to provide indications of workplace bullying and its manifestations in that work unit. There were indications of bullying, as 31% of respondents felt they have been bullied in the past year. Another colleague of other merber of staff was named as the bully. Verbal bullying was named as the most common form of bullying.

In conclusion, tackling bullying should be intensified and awareness of zero tolerance in the work should be increased. Bullying should be tackled more effectively by the supervisor and common guidelines should be developed for the unit. Employees felt the supervisor was aware of most bullying situations. The threshold for employees to report their experiences should be lowered and the supervisor should act after hearing about the cases. Bullying should not be accept in any form.
