There are many ways to cause a bone fracture. Bone fractures are mostly treated with immobilization treatment. About 8 % of all accidents that happen during exercise are diagnosed as bone fractures. Ankles are usually fractured from the Malleus. Malleus fractures can be treated with the usage of open cast or open orthosis.

This thesis was produced as a project. A cast with joints and a cast with a back seam where used in the project. The task of the project was to produce an illustrated guide, making of an opencast orthosis for nursing staff at TYKS Acute. The guide is meant to be used for the treatment of Weber A type fractures. The aim of the project is to unify guidelines within The Hospital District of Southwest Finland. The project also aims to support the patients with ankle fractures, as well as reducing of patient injuries. Active feedback was given during the project by the orderly from TYKS Acute. This ensured the quality and the progress of the project.

The guide begins with a list of needed items and moves step by step, all the way to the point where the cast is ready for use. The final guide included 30 PowerPoint-slides. the pages where green. the text was set at the left side of every slide. the text was written with white Century Cothig font, size 14. The pictures where mostly set at the right side of slides. The guide became a detailed and plain guide on how to make an open cast orthosis.
