Autonomic shift planning means that the nurse plans work shift for her or himself with other colleagues. Autonomic shift planning objective is to increase well-being. Well-being increases employees' work efficiency. The project was based on the need of the ICU of Turku University Hospital to increase the well-being and also find out if the scheduling can be implemented so that employees can inde-pendently and collectively with their collegues plan work shifts. The project goal was to create the plan how employees design work shifts autonomously in the ICU of the Turku University Hospital. The purpose of the project was to find the key elements of a good autonomous work shift planning. Those key elements are tools for the employer and the employees to do work shift designing. An applied survey was conducted to study the opinions and the functioning of the implemented autonomous shift planning in the ICUs of the Finnish University Hospitals (N = 5). Based on the survey, for example anticipating the staffing level and clear channels for information exchange were found as the key elements. Those elements must be implemented differently in each environment. The information acquired from the survey was used to create a work scheduling plan for the ICU of the Turku University Hospital. The project survey was executed in cooperation with the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District, the Pirkanmaa Hospital District and the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa.
