Taaperoikäisten lasten uniongelmat ja niiden ratkaisumenetelmät : koulutusmateriaali taaperon hyvän unen perusteista

The purpose of this study was to gather information on toddlers’ sleeping habits and problems and how to solve these problems. In this study pediatrician H. Karp’s sleep interventions were translated into Finnish. In addition, the purpose of this study was to form a training material based on the findings. Furthermore, the aim was to reduce sleeping problems amongst toddlers and increase the wellbeing of the entire family by using the gathered information.

This study was conducted as a project. The data used in this study were collected through a structured search of various databases and from online sources, other literature and in particular H. Karp’s book, Happiest Baby – the Guide to Great Sleep. The training material was made for professionals who work with toddlers and their families. The material can also be used to educate parents and caregivers.

It was found that the most common sleeping problems amongst toddlers were related to falling asleep, refusing to go to bed and waking up during the night. The suggested sleep interventions handled i.e., routines, having a well-functioning relationship between the child and the parent and patience stretching.

In the future, additional research will be required in order to create a more comprehensive sleep guide and the diversity of families must be taken into account in further development of sleep intervention materials. In addition to the subjects touched on in the thesis, parents also need easily accessible information regarding the underlying reasons behind toddlers’ sleep problems.
