The balcony railing system plays a key role in the user safety of balconies as they function as a fall barrier on the balcony. The design of the glass railing system takes into account the current legislation, regulations and guidelines, on the basis of which the dimensioning standards of glass structures are made for the loads imposed on the railing by Eurocode. However, there have been deficiencies in the durability of the glass parts of the balcony railing system. For example, in Tikkurila, Vantaa, the failing glass railing led to a fatal accident when a person fell through the glass railing. As a result of the accident, the construction supervision has tightened the inspections on the design process of glass railing in terms of durability. The work focusing on the glass balcony railing system was considered very topical at Takoi Rakennesuunnittelu Oy. Safety factors and durability of the railing system’s glass parts were set to be the focus of this thesis. The aim of this thesis was to learn about the structural design, safety and the used glass types of the railing system. In addition to the design requirements, one of the central topics was to get acquainted with the measurement of railing glass. As part of this thesis, tables were made based on the measurements to guide the choice of glass railing thickness. The aim of these tables is to support the choice of a right glass railing. The knowledge base for the thesis was compiled by studying the legislation, regulations and guidelines related to the design and safety of the balcony railing system. Glass durability testing was studied with the standard pendulum test that is mandatory for balcony glass railing. Different types of glass commonly used as railing glass were studied on the basis of professional literature and online sources from various Finnish and international glass suppliers. The measurement was carried out in accordance with Eurocodes and glass structure measurement standards using the FEM-Design structural analysis software, which was also used to create guide tables according to the measurement results. The expertise of the client’s organization was also utilized in the measurement. As a result of this thesis, a comprehensive knowledge base was created about the safety and durability of the balcony railing system, focusing on glass parts. The measurements of the glass railing furthered the understanding how different kind of glass types and support systems affect the durability of the glass railing. Based on the measurement results, comprehensive guide tables for general stress cases of apartment buildings were made. The results showed that the glass size affects the distribution of tension and magnitude of deflections. The results also showed that when the glass size becomes larger the wind load has a greater impact on the glass. While making this thesis, it was noticed that there are different kinds of ways to measure the glass railing in Finland. One possible follow-up research would be to study the possible differences between different measuring ways.
