The subject of this thesis was to draw up a sketch complementary building plan of a block located in Haapaniemi, Kuopio. Wooden houses in the block are historically significant and the whole area is a protected site. The area is also a candidate for a national city park. There is a lot of available land in the plots, which are suitable for complementary building. The thesis was commissioned by the city of Kuopio.

The idea of the thesis arose on a project course during school where a complementary building plan for a plot which is part of the area in question was made. The plots in the block are very similar and built in the same way, so the complementary building plan for the whole block should be investigated in greater detail. The city of Kuopio was contacted and it was found out that a complementary building plan for the area had also been suggested before. However, further development had faded for lack of more detailed plans. The town planning department of Kuopio decided to work as a commissioner of the project and it was possible to start working immediately.

The design work was started by ordering necessary materials from the city of Kuopio. By the materials it was possible to start for example the topography modelling. The extent of the project was limited with the commissioners at the starting meeting. Background information of complementary building was available from the course mentioned above, so the working began smoothly. Final designing and creating the sketch plans were made by the Revit 2017 software.

As a result of the thesis, a complementary building plan for the block was obtained. The plan includes a land use planning of the whole block, plans of a CLT-structured house and parking plans for a park area. During the thesis the area was investigated from different aspects. These findings may be useful in future if the complementary building project starts.
