The purpose of my thesis has been to find out how the TrimMare program has affected the occupational health care systems of professional seafarers, and to find out if the program has motivated seafarers to pay more attention to their own welfare. My aim was to get a solid response percentage from the applicable vessels, so the results could be put to use in improving the working conditions of the target group. The thesis was carried out as a quantitative, semi-structured questionnaire which was carried out in co-operation with the Turku Institution of Occupation Health, Viking Line Oy Ab, and Rettig Bore Ltd. The target group was made up of the personnel abroad Viking Line vessels “M/S Amorella” and “M/S Isabella”, as well as the Bore Ltd vessels' Finnish crew. The take from the Viking Line vessels was 700 people, and Rettig Bore amounted to 400, for a total of 1,100 professional seafarers. All information has been gathered in February of 2009. The questionnaire got 81 replies, for a reply percentage of 7.3 %. The material was analyzed statistically, and the textual answers' were analyzed thoroughly. According to the results, the majority of respondents feel working conditions have not improved over the course of the past three years, even though the food seems to be healthier nowadays. An important note is that many respondents mentioned the leadership and social skills of foremen to be have a great impact on wellbeing, as well as the quality of the cabins crew live in. Another prominent answer was having enough workforce. Onboard healthcare is generally regarded as good and functional on all vessels, while the impartiality of onboard healthcare could be something to work on. Most of the respondents regard their lifestyle as healthy. The majority of the respondents answer as not having made great changes in their way of life - but the ones who have made changes, have made them mostly for the better. The most motivating factors seem to be will power and feeling the positive impacts of a healthier lifestyle.
