The purpose of this research was to investigate the cardiopulmonary resuscitation quality of the first responder’s working in the area of South Karelia, and the impact of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation training on the resuscitation quality. The thesis was executed with the obtained research results, the theory knowledge of the subject and the previously done investigations about the topic.

The analysed research results were received from the initial and final measurements performed using a cardiopulmonary resuscitation doll. The conclusions obtained from the research results were gathered into a study material corresponding in particular to the study group’s problem areas during resuscitation. The contents of the study package were assembled using first aid literature, as well as taking advantage of the numerous previously done studies about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The research design of the thesis was a comparative investigation, with the help of what we attained results before the training and after. The theoretical frame of reference of the thesis was the quality of resuscitation.

The research team consisted of a number of people involved in first response, who all had completed successfully the first responder course. The obtained test results were dealt with as a group, not individually. Comparing the results from initial and final measurements, of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation areas the best development was seen in chest reversibility. In turn, the biggest challenge was obtaining enough of compression depth. From the results it was clear that small technical details had a lot of significance in the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. As an example, the positioning of the hands correctly to the chest and the perfect restoration of the chest contribute significantly to the possibility to get the blood flow restarted. For this reason, it is important to pay attention to these details when practicing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

With the obtained measurements, education and feedback, it is concluded that cardiopulmonary resuscitation training is useful and important to the quality of resuscitation. Regular resuscitation practice and repetition of the theory knowledge related to the topic should not be underrated, this can be proven on the basis of this thesis.
