The purpose of this study was to examine how a first time home buyer can prepare to buy an apartment. The aim was to create a guide that helps young people to get started in preparing to buy a first home. The study also examines what the options for saving are, how to pay for the apartment and how society supports first time home buyers. In addition, the study researched solvency of young people.

This was a functional thesis, and the result is a guide. It was important to study the subject right now, because next year the loan ceiling will come into effect, and this requires the first time home buyer to 5% self-financing. The information was gathered from literature, the Internet and by interviewing a specialist. The theoretical part examined ways of how to prepare to buy an apartment. Based on the theoretical part, the guide was written. An important aim was to provoke thoughts of the young people about their own solvency.

In the future saving will increase. This will undoubtedly increase the popularity of the ASP-system. It is likely that the loan ceiling will turn the process of buying the first home into a healthier direction: as banks tighten their credit granting, young people will be more likely to buy apartments that are better suited to their own life situation.
