The new childwelfare law emphasizes the work that is performed with families during custody. Therefore family work is in need of development. The aim of this research is to describe the experiences of the young people, their parents, the social workers and the team at Leivokoti. The goal of this research is to produce a value model of family work. The purpose of the development is to hear about experiences in family work. The goal is to produce knowledge that can be used in the development of family work. This research uses qualitative research methods. The data was collected by interviewing young people and their parents. SWOT-analysis was employed when gathering data from the team. The social workers answered an open questionnaire. The development was directed by Bikva assesment method. The data was analysed using content analysis or its characteristics. The young described their problems in family relationships, the lack of boundaries and substance abuse inside a family. In young people’s opinion their familiesreceived emotional support, they were contacted, coping at home was supported and authoritative measures were performed. The young people felt that their family relationships had improved, their sense of responsibility had increased and schoolgoing had eased along with family work. According to the youngsters, communication between family members, arranging of theme days and interaction were the biggest challenges in family work. The parents described changes in family circumstances, behavioural symptoms of the young, inadequate flow of information and presence before the start of family work. Family work had involved functions, interaction with the family and advantages of family accommodation. The parents felt that the situation at home had calmed and they had strengthened, and the young had rehabilitated with the help of family work. Working during discharge stage, interaction, emotions and humanity were the biggest challenges in family work according to the parents. The social workers described the lack of parenting and conflicts between family members before the start of family work. They felt that the parents were given conversational help, the personnel at the institution had been in contact with the parents and made home visits. The social workers saw parents’ feelings of guilt diminish and the interaction between family members improve. The parents are in the key role, according to the social workers. The challenges are how to increase family work in families, and to utilize psychiatric expertise and written reporting to the social services. The team felt that the internal strength of Leivokoti is their strong profressional know-how. The staff and time resources were the biggest challenges in Leivokoti. Maintaining a parent-child relationship came up as the main external expectation. The most significant external challenges in family work were the young people’s and parents’ lack of commitment. The results of the research highlight the growth and the development of the young, which constructed the value model of family work. In family work a professional staff tries to achieve a confidential interaction with a family, especially through listening and peer support, all in in a young person's best interest. Continuity, commitment, humanity and functionality in family work enable young person’s mental growth.
