Job satisfaction in media company

The job satisfaction of a company`s personnel has a major impact on a company's success and competitiveness. Job satisfaction should be examined on a regular basis because it maintains and promotes health, well-being, motivation and innovation of the employees.

The aim of this study was to examine general job satisfaction of employees in an international media company. An empirical study was used to determine the research problem and to obtain answers to the question; in what areas of job satisfaction is there evidence of dissatisfaction?

The theoretical framework consisted of job satisfaction in different areas; management’s and leadership’s impact on employees' job satisfaction and satisfaction theories. In this thesis the areas of job satisfaction refers to all the factors that have an impact on job satisfaction; the work itself, sense of security, sense of community, respect and self-development.

The subject of the empirical study was a case company and its office employees in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The study was conducted as a quantitative survey and research data was collected using an e-form. The questionnaire was structured and had multiple-choice questions and open questions. Questionnaires were sent to 54 employees but there were only 17 responses. Due to a limited response to the questionnaire only the Finnish office results felt reliable, so this study is focused on analyzing only the Finnish office employees' answers. The total response rate was 31.5% and the Finnish office response rate was 90.1 %. The survey was analyzed by using SPSS and Excel programs.

All contributory factors affecting job satisfaction should be assessed so as to enable the best possible job satisfaction. The results show that job satisfaction among the employees is generally good, but a few areas would be even better by improvements. At the moment the biggest reasons for dissatisfaction are recruiting, the functionality of work equipment and space and stress caused by work.
