The prevention of threat and violence situations in hair salon

The purpose of this thesis was to write a safety guide for hairdressers to prevent threat and violence situations. The aim of the thesis was also to define what kind of threat and violence situations may occur in hair salons, and how to recognize, manage and prevent these threatening situations.

The thesis consisted of a theoretical and functional part that is the safety guide. The information in the guide was based on theory, an interview of an expert and discussions with hairdressers.

In this thesis violence signifies violent behaviour directed to a hairdresser by a customer or an outside person. In hair salons, the most typical threatening situations were made by intoxicated people behaving disturbingly. Also the robberies were threatening violence situations in hair salons.

The most important issues comprise preventing the threatening situations, anticipating the threat and violence situations, and methods that could be used in hair salons. The best way to handle the threatening situations was to speak calmly.

The safety guide can be used in small hair salons. The guide is also suitable for other small beauty care companies.
