The subject of this thesis was to solve the current problems in the lighting grid of Rovaniemi. The main problem was the existence of very old fashioned switchboards without any energy consumption metering. Blueprints were made to demonstrate the change where older switchboards were replaced with new ones which have the ability to meter the energy consumption. Some of the switchboards were planned to be removed and to connect the electric cables to another switchboard as a larger lighting group. The documentation of the lighting grid lacked information. In this thesis there was used the information of the network database. When the blueprints were made, the fact that all of the information was not entirely accurate was noticed. For the most accurate result the information was in-spected on the spot if possible. Dimensioning the grid, we have to be prepared for the worst condition of the grid. Switchboards without metering and old fashioned control systems strain the outdoor lighting grid. As the result of the thesis there were 20 blueprints made to upgrade the condition of the outdoor lighting in Rovaniemi. The control units were taken into account when the blueprints were made. For the improvement of documentation there were new inspection records were made.
