Tutkimme opinnäytetyössämme adoptioäitien äidiksi kasvamista. Selvitimme heidän kokemuksiaan saamastaan tuesta sekä siitä, miten äidin ja lapsen välinen kiintymyssuhde on syntynyt. Tutkimuksestamme selviää myös adoptioäitien mahdollisesti kokemat ympäristön asettamat paineet ja adoptioprosessin aikana läpikäydyt tunteet. Lisäksi selvitimme mitkä asiat ovat vaikuttaneet kiintymyssuhteen syntymiseen ja mitkä asiat ovat olleet oleellisia matkalla adoptioäitiyteen. Tutkimuksemme on kvalitatiivinen eli laadullinen. Lähestyimme tutkimustamme ohjeistetun narratiivisuuden eli kertomuksellisuuden näkökulmasta ja keräsimme tutkimusaineistomme adoptioäitien henkilökohtaisista kirjeistä. Tutkimukseemme osallistui seitsemän adoptioäitiä. Käytimme aineiston analyysimenetelmänä induktiivista sisällönanalyysia. Tutkimuksemme tuloksista voidaan todeta, että äidin rakkaus ja äidiksi kasvaminen alkaa kehittyä, kun tieto adoptiolapsesta saadaan tai ajan myötä äidin ja lapsen tutustuessa toisiinsa. Tutkimuksessa tuli esille kotiäitiyden positiivinen merkitys kiintymyssuhteen syntymiselle sekä se ilo pienistäkin edistysaskeleista, kun toisilleen tuntemattomat ihmiset opettelevat toistensa tavoille. Tutkimustulostemme pohjalta adop-tioäidit saivat adoptioprosessiinsa tukea ammattihenkilöiltä, sukulaisilta, ystäviltä sekä puolisoilta. Voidaan todeta, että tuen tarve ja sen merkitys on äideillä yksilöllistä. Tutkimuksemme johtopäätös on, että äidiksi kasvaminen tapahtuu jokaisella äidillä omista taustoistaan riippuen omalla tavalla. Ei ole olemassa tiettyä kaavaa, jonka poh-jalta äidiksi kasvaminen ja kahden toisilleen vieraan ihmisen välinen kiintymyssuhde kehittyisi. Jokainen adoptioäiti kokee adoptioprosessin eri tavalla.

The purpose of our scholarly thesis is to investigate how adoptive mothers grow as mothers. We defined their experiences concerning the support they were attained, and how the attachment-relationship between a mother and a child developed. Our study also shows the possible pressure of the adoptive mothers exposed by the environment, and the feelings in time of the adoption process. In addition, we defined issues affecting to the attachment-relationship come into existence, and which were the essential issues in a way to adoptive motherhood. Our study is qualitative. Our approach is narrative and we gathered information for our study from the private letters sent by adoptive mothers. In all seven adoptive mothers participated in our study. We used the inductive content analysis as an analyzing method. The results of our study show that the maternal love and the growing as a mother start to be developed either in a time getting a piece of information about the child or along with mother and child are getting to know each other. Our study points out the positive value of the full-time motherhood for the attachment-relationship coming into existence, and the joy even of the short steps of the come to know progressing of the strangers. According to our study adoptive mothers got support from professionals, relatives, friends and their spouses. It can be found that the need and the significance of the support are individual. The conclusion of our study is that any mother's growing as a mother takes place in her own way depending on their backgrounds. There is no certain pattern or formula for growing as mothers or developing of the attachment-relationship of two strange individuals. Every adoptive mother experiences the adoption process in a different way.
