Breathing pattern disorders are a growing problem in the modern world and the symptoms and comorbidities involved they have become significantly more common in recent years. Living in today’s busy rhythm of life and thus the effects of stress to the body may also contribute to the development of functional respiratory disorders. The aim of the thesis was to answer in the principles of a descriptive literature review what is the prevalence of asthma-like symptoms amongst athletes and what are the theories of the development of these kinds of symptoms particularly in endurance athletes. Literature reviews were collected with an information retrieval by using the Pubmed, ResearchGate and Google Scholar databases in principles of a descriptive literature review. The results show that asthma-like symptoms are common amongst elite endurance athletes and it has been shown that different types of sports are more susceptible to develop asthma-like symptoms. These more prone to develop such symptoms are for example cross-country skiers and swimmers. However some results show that having asthma-like symptoms does not affect the athlete’s performance. The development of functional respiratory disorders are influenced by an increase in the amount of training in an unfavorable environment, these factors may cause asthma-like symptoms that may affect the athletes’ performance.
