Finnish racism has been present in the political debate last year. The thesis examined the ways in which whiteness and racism appear in an educational employee and the effects of racism on parenting strategies. The aim of this work was to develop capacities of early childhood education workers to recognize the thought processes and practices that produce racism in themselves, in work communities, and in children’s friendships. The research method of the work was a descriptive literature review, and autoethnography based on the author’s own experiences of discrimination was utilized as an overarching perspective I the whole study. The literature review included five international articles and two Finnish articles. The articles addressed racism and whiteness from the perspectives of the parent, the employee and the child. Whiteness and racism appear in the employee’s relationships as the defense of employee whiteness, everyday racism and microaggression, and as effects of racism and whiteness in on parenting strategies. Racism produced by an educational employee appears as bypassing and denying racism. Parents use a variety of strategies to reduce the detrimental effects of racism on a child's wellbeing. The employee strengthens parent’s and child’s internalized racism by bypassing racism. Upbringing strategies that arise from internalized racism or whiteness can replicate the society´s burden of racism on the child. Based on the thesis, there is a need in early childhood education to dismantle the unconscious thought processes and practices based on white supremacy that form barriers for antiracist work.
