In this thesis I analyse the double role of an artist and a producer. The double role occurs when an artist takes responsibility for the artistic work besides the production process of a performance. The artist-producer brings the project from the beginning until the end taking full responsibility for the content of the event as well as its technical and financial planning and team leading.

The methods of this thesis are experience research with narrative approach, thematic interviews for data collection and comparative analysis of the observations and findings. For collecting data I interviewed four artist-producers, who were Jyrki Anttila, Jenni Kinnunen, Angelika Klas and Leena Malkki. In their interviews came out some experiences of the artists, their personal vocations for artistic work and their responses to them by implementing their visions and producing performances. In the double role of an artist-producer a person has to manage two roles, after planning their product eg. a concert they are responsible for selling this artistic experience product. The work of artist-producers is settled in the private sector in the cultural field.

The results of this thesis show that the double role as an artist-producer demands a large amount of work and full responsibility of the whole organisation. Based on the results of this theses I wrote a manual called Artist-producer's pocket book. In this booklet there is reflective knowledge based on the literature and the interviews made within the framework of this thesis. The pocket book is intended to be used by an artist who wants or needs to produce his own work.
