At the beginning of the year 2022 the subscriber of the thesis, Helsingin Leijona Ltd., will merge with another company, Helsinki Wholesale Food Market. The goal of the new company is to develop urban meeting places, event activities, and the attractiveness and vitality of areas and places. Also, The Senate Square Summer Terrace, which gained great popularity in the summer of 2020, was decided to move to a new environment, Kasarmitori Square, in the summer of 2021. The purpose of this study was to find new ideas and development suggestions that could help to develop the summer terrace concept as well as the new company in its goal. The study was based on the theory of place making and the use of public spaces, and also the events of the city of Helsinki and the characteristics of city events were studied. The research material was collected through benchmarking and interviews, utilizing one's own experiences and observations, as well as news coverage and writings in the media. The results showed which features affect the success of place making sites and which factors are important for development. For example, comfort, participation, and continuity were felt to be important. The study produced short- and long-term development proposals for the company related to the summer terrace concept and the use of public space. The short-term development proposals included communication channels, collecting the visitor feedback and programme. Proposals for long-term development included cooperation between cities and social inclusion. Hopefully the research and its results will also help other similar projects and organizers in their work.
