The goal of this thesis was to examine the importance of veteran parks as places to preserve and remember traditions. The topic was approached by examining, through a literature survey, which factors determine the relevance of a place and how it affects the identity and sense of place. The review is used to justify why veteran parks play an important role in growing and changing cities. The work was commissioned by the municipality of Tuusula, so the work also considers what Tuusula's identity is, on the one hand, as a well-known place of military history and, on the other hand, as a place during intense new construction, and what significance the veteran park has for Tuusula. The aim of the functional part of the thesis was to design the Tuusula Veterans Park, which honours the memory of veterans, and which tells about history but also about the importance of peace for residents, schoolchildren, and visitors alike. The mission of veterans’ organizations is to promote the preservation and transfer of veteran traditions to future generations. Several veterans' monuments have been established in Finland in green environments, as well as veteran parks for this purpose. The municipality of Tuusula has an active Tuusula Veterans Association and a Veterans' Committee, at whose request the municipality decided to start planning and implementing a Veterans Park on a plot adjacent to the Air Defence Museum in Hyrylä, Tuusula. The result of the work was a park plan that involved stakeholders and takes into account the objectives of sustainable environmental construction themes: increasing species diversity, user groups of different ages, accessibility and preserving history. The Veterans Park and its surrounding museum areas will most likely strengthen Tuusula's identity as a guardian of military history and veteran heritage. Preserving the layered nature of history as Tuusula renews itself from the perspective of both construction and its vision for the future supports local culture and history. In conclusion, although the Veterans Park represents values and traditions, designing it as a functional park with ecological values in mind does not contradict the basic idea of establishing a park for honouring the memory of war veterans.
