Ornamentaalinen kuvioaihe keraamisen rasian koristeena

The purpose of the thesis was to discover a decoration technique suitable for applying an ornamental motif on a ceramic box. At the background of the thesis there is the author’s plan on becoming an entrepreneur in Design. The aim was to get ahead in developing the ceramic box into a key product for the upcoming business. In addition, the focus was on defining a decoration technique that would support and show the author’s artistic skills as well as be utilised in future projects. The research material for the thesis was collected mainly from the literature in the field of ceramics. In the production part of the thesis the development process of the existing so called alpha prototype progressed into the manufacturing of the beta prototype. The prototype was fabricated by slip casting using a plaster mould. In addition, a decorative motif inspired by Art Nouveau was designed, based on which decorative experiments were made. Besides the casting clay, the materials used were engobes and glazes. The decoration techniques for the beta prototype were chosen based on the results from the decorative experiments. The project resulted in the creation of a beta prototype for the box with two different ornamental motif options, using two different decoration techniques. The chosen techniques were incising and shellac decoration. The results are also shown in the thesis report as photographs. In addition to the decoration of the box, the decoration techniques shown in the results are broadly suited to the author's future business. Product pricing must consider the time required for the decoration work, but at the same time the decorations bring added value to the product. Keywords ceramics, slip casting, decoration, Art Nouveau
