Khlebnikov, Kirill, henkilöyhteys 1841

fyysinen kuvaus: Pääluettelo: Fyra st. hårnålar som bäras af kaliforniska indianer (landets norra del). Flgs kat. 344. [Myöhempi lisäys] Pomo? T.H. [= Travis Hudson] [ja] 2 manzanita-puuta, yksi linnun siipiruotia, ollut kokonaan punaisilla woodpecker (tikan) päänahoilla peitetty, 1 vain jäljellä.

Hiuskoristeet, 3 kpl.

VK343a on manzanitapuusta veistetty, kummastakin päästään kapeneva puikko. Puikkoon on kiedottu jännenauhaa ja palanen punavalkeaa nyöriä. Puikkoon on myös kiinnitetty riippuvat kasvikuitunauhat, jotka on koristeltu lasihelmillä ja palasella abaloni-kotilon helmiäiskuorta. Lasihelmiä on yhteensä 52; niistä 38 on valkeaa ja 12 tiilenpunaista, lisäksi kummassakin nauhassa on yksi erikoinen läpinäkyvä punainen helmi, jossa on valkea koristeraita.

VK343b on manzanitapuusta veistetty, toisesta päästään kapeneva puikko. Puikkoon on koristeeksi sidottu kasvikuitunauha, johon on ilmeisesti ollut kiinnitettynä linnunsulkia – nyt jäljellä on vain sulkakynät. Nauhasta on riippunut helminauhapari, nyt toinen on irronnut. Kiinnijääneeseen nauhaan on pujotettu viisi simpukankuorihelmeä, ilmeisesti nauhan päästä puuttuu sulkakoriste. Irrallaan esineen mukana on toisen samanlaisen koristenauhan kaksi pätkää, joissa on yhteensä viisi simpukankuorihelmeä ja sulkakoriste (nyt vain kynät jäljellä).

VK343c kaksi paksua linnun luuta on liitetty sitomalla nauhoilla, jotka ovat osin jännettä, osin kasvikuitua ja osin punaista villalankaa. Nauhoilla on sidottu myös palanen nahkaa, (todennäköisesti jäänne terhotikan päänahan höyhenkoristeesta), josta höyhenet ovat hävinneet, sekä punaista villakangasta. Kynien väliin on asetettu pieni pala lasia tai kvartsikiveä. Hiuskoristeen toiseen päähän on sidottu helmin koristeltu lanka, jonka päässä on pala abaloni-kotilon helmäiskuorta. Nauhassa on 13 valkeaa lasihelmeä, 14 tiilenpunaista Aleppon helmeä, kolme mustaa lasihelmeä sekä yksi simpukankuorihelmi.

VK343d Alkuperäisessä luettelossa mainittu neljäs hiuskoriste puuttuu.

Three Pomo hair pins.

VK343a is a Manzanita wood pin tapering toward both ends. Sinew and a bit of red and white string are wrapped around the pin. A vegetable fiber cord with its ends hanging loose has been tied to the pin and these are decorated with glass beads; each cord ends in a piece of abalone. There are altogether 53 glass beads: 38 of them white, 12 brick red and in addition to these beads, a red transparent bead with a white decorative stripe is added to each cord.

VK343b is a Manzanita wood pin tapering towards one end. The other end is tied with a vegetable fiber cord with bird feathers, now only quills remain. There has been two ends of strings hanging loose, now only one remains attached. On that string five shell disc beads are threaded, apparently its feather tip has been cut off. Separate from the hair pins, there are two bits of string which complete the second decorative string: these have five shell disc beads altogether and a feather tip (now only quills remain).

VK343c is a hair pin made of two thick bird bones tied together with vegetable fiber cord, sinew cord and a bit of red woolen yarn. The binding also fastens a piece of leather (probably remains of an acorn woodpecker scalp feather decoration) and red woolen cloth. Between the quills a tiny fragment of quartz or glass is set. A cord is tied to the other end of the hair pin. This cord is decorated with 13 white glass beads, 14 Cornaline d’Aleppo beads, three black glass beads and one shell disc bead, as well as a piece of abalone.

VK343d The fourth pin mentioned in the original catalogue is missing.

Two hair pins were donated by Etholén either in 1846 according to the original list (Varjola, 1990). The main catalog, however, mentions four hair pins. Another interesting piece of information is that the Russian American Company's longtime California agent, Kirill Khlebnikov, returned to Russia in 1834 with the same ship carrying Etholén’s previous donation and was inspired to present himself an object as a gift to the Etholén collection (Varjola, 1990). Unfortunately, it is not known what the said “gift” was. Perhaps the two Manzanita wood pins (VK343a and b) are the ones mentioned for the donation 1846 and the other hair pin VK343c was an earlier donation either by Etholén or even Khlebnikov’s gift.
