Examination of the energy efficiency of drying process

In the paper industry market oversupply and strongly rising costs significantly affect the cost competitiveness of the paper industry. The last energy crisis in 2022, which affected the entire forest industry caused strong cost increases.

In this Master Thesis potential targets for improving energy efficiency have been searched for the coating machine line which has started in 2001. Items that improve energy efficiency were found in process driving methods and waste heat flows. In this master’s Thesis has also noticed new drying method with a coating machine what improves energy efficiency.

In the literature part of the work deals with the post-processing of paper in terms of coating, drying, and polishing. The sources of the master’s thesis have been various scientific literature and internet sources related to the topic, which have been applied in practical experiments on the production line.

In the master’s thesis it was possible to find possible entities related to energy efficiency, and the effect of the objects from the point of view of energy efficiency was clarified.

From results of the work, proposals related to improving efficiency and recommended follow up measures related to the proposals were made.

The master’s thesis did not take a direct position on financial effects, such as investment and investment payback period.
