Replacing the use of imported Russian natural gas in Europe

The topic of this bachelor's thesis to find is ways to replace natural gas imported from Russiato Europe. In addition, it determines how the European energy system has been formed and what role Russia plays in it, as well as clarifying the reasons behind the need for the replacement of Russian energy imports. The review is mostly limited to measures for a short period of time, approximately 5 years. Geographically, the work is limited to Europe.

The results of the thesis bring forward some means to replace the import of Russian gas to Europe. One mean is finding other sources of imports away from Russia by utilizing liquefied natural gas. The importation of liquefied natural gas has multiple problems related to logistics and infrastructure. Other way to decrease the imports is increasing the share of renewable energy in energy production. Europe is heavily dependent on imports, so renewable energy can enable better energy self-sufficiency in Europe. The third area is improving the energy efficiency of the European society. For example, by reducing the need for heating of accommodations or by changing the way we consume energy, the use of Russia-based energy goods can be reduced significantly. The means of reduction presented in this thesis have a potential to reduce natural gas imports from Russia by about 155 bcm. This amount is roughly the amount Europe imports natural gas from Russia each year.
