Regeneration of carbonaceous filters

Regeneration of carbonaceous filters is important for the recycling of the filter material. The use of the same active carbon through cycling regeneration, you usually only lose a minor part of the materials adsorption capability, thus achieving greater cost effectiveness.

The goal of this thesis is to find out procedures to regenerate carbonaceous filter materials and test the regeneration of one such material, shungite. In the theoretical part of this thesis, the focus will be on the regeneration of carbonaceous filters, their effectiveness, and mechanisms. The experimental is based on the 2016 SHEM-WP project.

The results of the experiments reveal of the three chosen regeneration techniques, 0.1 M HCl was the most effective in removing material off shungite, though CaCl2 was the most effective in increasing the adsorption capabilities of the material. Thermal treatment of shungite had little to no effect in regenerating the material.
