Technologies utilizing virtual reality and augmented reality have mostly been used in entertainment industry. By using 3D-models created from point clouds from laser scanning content production can be automated and streamlined. Laser scanning has mostly been used to scan different structures and rooms. The scanned rooms have been turned into CAD models which are viewed through the modelling software itself. Laser scanning and 3D-modelling have also been used to model caves, trees, people, organs and objects. Multiple ways for the display and compression of point clouds obtained through laser scanning have been developed. Each method is highlighted by the need to create 3Dmodels fast and efficiently despite the large volume of data. In the past ten years the amount of patents combining laser scanning, virtual reality and augmented reality has grown exponentially.
