LED ceiling product development

The goal of this master’s thesis was to study different ways of creating LED light panels and to further develop these into a model suitable for elevator lighting. The design process was guided by principles of thin structuring, uniformly distributed luminous intensity and ease of manufacturing. Another goal was viability in elevator cars of varying sizes. This resulted in a preference for design features that allowed for the most dimensional variation.

Study began with research into the literature of LED lighting technologies and manufacturing friendly designs. This step included the study of established LED solutions as well as newer, emerging technologies in the field. Development ultimately proceeded with established models of side-lit and direct-lit luminaires, since their respective components were readily available and relatively economical to acquire.

Further development of these luminaire models was carried out as a design project for KONE Industrial Ltd. The project utilized the company’s local expertise as well as that of its subcontractors. Both luminaires were developed to the first stages of prototype implementations. These prototypes were then observed to draw conclusions on what form of further development were required for productization. Furthermore, the development process as a whole was scrutinized for details that would require special care in future designs of similar products.
