Using line arrays in guitar speakers

Using line array speakers to direct sound, especially in PA systems for large stages, has be-come increasingly common in the last decades due to their ability to increase the reach of the sound and decrease reflections. The goal of this thesis is to explore the possibilities of using line arrays in smaller applications, especially guitar speakers, by means of a literature review. The physics and principles of line arrays are first examined in the theory part of the work. The dimensions and restrictions of a directional line array speaker are then derived based on that information. Finally, two compact line array speaker systems available on the market and one traditional guitar speaker are compared to the theory of line array directivi-ty.

Based on examples calculated according to the theory and comparison with the existing speakers, a directional line array speaker is possible. Designing the speaker to be compact enough to be used as a guitar speaker however, would require some compromises. Based solely on the directivity of the line array design, the speaker could not be designed to be small enough for mobility and directional over the whole desired frequency range at the same time.
