Snow storage and utilization of snow for cooling buildings, Case: Kone Oyj

The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine the possibility to utilize snow on cooling buildings at Kone’s Hyvinkää factory area. In this report is also told generally of different cooling methods and cooling production. Snow cooling and energy balances were studied based on different literature sources. The energy balance and model was also made for Kone’s area. The model was used to determine the amount of snow to utilize for cooling. The investment and production costs for the storage were defined from the literature sources and the help of experts. The calculated operation costs were compared to traditional compressor cooling. At the end payback times of the snow storage were compared to existing cooling systems and whole new cooling network. Based on the calculations the snow cooling isn’t economically profitable in the Kone’s Hyvinkää factory area. Major problems were high investment costs compared to savings. From the environmental and company’s points of view snow cooling is profitable. Snow cooling could be economically more profitable if the snow amount and the cooling rate were bigger. Also utilization of nature’s own structures could make project more profitable.
