This master’s thesis is a qualitative research about the history of children’s clothes. The subject of the research is the clothing of the Finnish children below the school age in the context of the Finnish arctic. Therefore, the aim of the research is to find out answers to the following question: what has the clothing of children aged below six years been like from the 1920s to the 2010s for the children to stand the cold and stay warm in the Finnish arctic circumstances? The study rests on hermeneutic understanding and it exploits the Lamb & Kallal’s conceptual framework for clothing design called the FEA-model. The model divides clothing in to three sections: functional, expressive, and aesthetic. Additionally, the FEA-model also considers the environmental use of clothing: the culture and target consumer. Hence, the theoretical framework of the research is mainly based on the concrete aspects of clothes and the environment of the social and cultural aspects. The study looks at the development of these objects through children’s winter clothes. The research data consists of interviews with ten Finnish from the Finnish arctic area and the analysis method used in the study is a thematic content analysis. The results of the research reveal that throughout the last century the children have managed in the Finnish arctic outdoor circumstances with wool clothing and layering of their clothes. The biggest change that has happened in the children’s clothing is in the outer layers of the clothing. The development of the clothing industry made it possible to bring out actual outdoor clothes that were both water and windproof. Furthermore, new materials were developed improving the functionality of the outdoor clothes. Throughout the years, children’s clothes have expressed adult’s likes, values, and attitudes as well as the authority of adults
