Liki neljänsadan kirjailijan romaani: Pirunmeri yhteiskirjoittamisen käytäntöinä ja mahdollisuuksina kollaboratiivisessa mediassa

This research explores the ways in which a novel can be co-written in collaborative media. The research material used in this study is the co-writing process of Pirunmeri (2011). Attention is paid to the platform, operations of material medium, participants’ actions and forms of contents that are produced in the interactions of these levels. Cybertext theory is applied as the method of analysis. The results bring out the meaning of co-writing process’ borders in pursuance of how they show the field of actions expands unlimitedly to Internet and how the cowriting operations vary from the operations typical to social media, to the elements familiar from games and the possibilities for audiovisual storytelling. The flexible operations of the material medium get their meanings from participants’ interests. The work of those participants that act surprisingly and unpredictably should be facilitated. In addition to the role of the fasilitator, different roles arise in the interactions of the participants. Participants that change roles get profiled instead of staying anonymous. Shared understanding of the co-writing practices and the book as the object is developed in the process. This is linked to the question of popular dimension: even if the material medium provides a possibility to produce a novel outreaching the limits of the printed media, the participants limit themselves to the formal conventions of the literature tradition, and in doing so, legitimate them. The key elements for digital design of co-writing process in collaborative media can be traced basis of the results. These elements of digital design pave the way for the practices and possibilities in collaborative media. They also emphasize participants’ preferences and interests as a democratic popular: it becomes evident that the question of medium development and break from the printed literature conventions is not only technological, but also emotive and ideological. As a cultural form, the printed book might be more resistant than expected and mediums are in convergence, not replacing each other. The role of the new media is not only to find new ways to present narratives, but new ways to produce them. Therefore, the future of the new media is not at stake in spite of the strong prominence of the tradition of printed book. Instead, the new media reasserts its prominence as the environments and means of producing literature, bringing together actors of the field into collaborative book business. This means that the media designers are given an opportunity to exploit the affordances of digital design, taking advantage of their media understanding.
