Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate victimisation of children from verbal and physical punishment by teachers and peer aggression at schools in Azerbaijan. Method: A questionnaire was completed by 394 children in Azerbaijan, 211 girls and 183 boys. The mean age for girls was 12.0 years (SD = 2.0), and for boys 11.8 (SD = 2.0). The paper-and-pencil questionnaire included scales for measuring victimisation of children from verbal and physical punishment by teachers and peer aggression at schools. Results: Boys had been significantly more victimised than girls from a teacher on all types of physical punishment except from being hit with an object. Boys were also more victimised from peers by hitting, pushing, kicking, and threats of being beaten up. No sex differences were found regarding victimisation from verbal punishment by a teacher. No significant sex differences were found for victimisation from peer aggression in the form of teasing, yelling, calling bad names, and spreading rumours. There were also no age trends regarding victimisation from punishment of any kind by a teacher. Conclusions: The findings suggest that school children in Azerbaijan are exposed to verbal and physical punishment by teachers and peer aggression of various forms. Boys were more exposed to physical forms than girls.
