Maternal prenatal capacity to mentalize: Associations between the semistructured Pregnancy Interview (PI) and a new self-report questionnaire, Prenatal Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (P-PRFQ)

Parental Reflective Functioning (i.e. RF) plays an important part in the child’s psychological development and the relationship forming between the parent and the child. Until recently, prenatal parental reflective functioning has been studied during pregnancy through interview methods. The aim of the present study was to explore maternal prenatal capacity to mentalize in two different ways: with a semi-structured interview method (Pregnancy Interview, PI) and a new self-report questionnaire (Prenatal Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire, P-PRFQ). Criterion validity of the P-PRFQ was explored by comparing its results with the results of PI. The participants of the study consisted of 29 Finnish, non-clinical, pregnant mothers within the FinnBrain birth cohort pilot study. In the present study, a significant positive association between PI and P-PRFQ was found, indicating that the two methods seem to measure the same underlying construct.
