In this thesis I deal with attributes of surface materials, their suitability to different spaces and the stages of installation. Collecting of the study material started in the spring of 2010. Typical attributes of surface materials were studied by reading written books and using personal knowledge. The section on choosing the right floor material was divided by the criteria affecting the selection. The sections on choosing wall and roof materials were divided by materials presented. While studying the attributes of surface materials, I learned that all materials have both good and bad attributes. When choosing surface materials, one should con-sider things like the purpose of use, cleaning matters, comfort of use and costs. Especially clarifying the purpose of use, will help choosing the right material. Exterior features should also be taken into account, when choosing surface mate-rials. After issues of choosing surface materials, thesis deals with the installation of more common materials. Material manufacturers web pages were excellent source due to their comprehensive instructions of installation. Different manufacturers instructions may vary a little but the main points are identical. Nevertheless, before starting the installation, proper instructions should always be verified from the manufacturer.
