Since 2010, self-employed dental hygienist has been able to prescribe medica-tions for professional activities. Pharmaceutical products, within the scope of pro auctore, are specified in a regulation of Ministry of social affairs and health. Extension of dental hygienists pro auctore would be a significant leap in devel-oping division of labor, effectivness and expertise. The aim of the study was to obtain information about the current state of dental hygienist pro auctore in Finland. The aim was to develop dental hygienist pro auctore. Two research problems was formed in this thesis. The aim was to iden-tify the current state of dental hygienist pro auctore in Finland and form devel-opment targets for pro auctore. The thesis was carried out in co-operation with the Finnish association of dental hygienists. Development targets were based on research material. Knowledge of pro auctore must be increased among dental hygienists. Future studies could con-tain for example how medical substances influence on dental hygienist job de-scription or how dental hygienists expertise can be developed.
