The aim of the present bachelor’s thesis is to research the effects of the new debt collection law which became effective on 16 March 2013. The research focus is on the most important reforms of the new law and on their effects on the revenue, profitability and operations of collection agencies. The present research applies qualitative research methods. In addition, more detailed information was gathered by conducting two interviews in collection agencies. The intention was to carry out three interviews, but the third interviewee declined due to trade secrets. The theory part of the thesis discusses the reforms of the new debt collection law and explains the steps of a collection process. In addition to this, information about different types of receivables is given to the reader. The research is done from the point of view of a professional collection agency. The data for the theory part were gathered from law texts, literature and internet articles. The results of the interviews indicate that the changes in the new collection law manifest themselves mainly in the decreased costs of voluntary consumer collection, in the number of demands for payment and payment plans. Estimating the effects on the collection agencies was more difficult because they do not yet appear fully in the companies’ revenues, profitability and operations. The two main reasons which made the forecasting of the effects difficult were that the new law had been effective only six months during the time of the research and that the new law to decrease the legal collection costs became effective in September 2012.
