The purpose of this study was to describe the typical challenges and problems related to cold weather concreting. This study describes the weather conditions in Finland and how they affect concreting in the winter. This study also describes different methods of heating, different qualitys’ of concrete used in cold weather concreting and different procedures which can be used to prevent the problems and damages caused by cold weather concreting. In addition the process of strength development and the related factors are discussed.

The biggest risks caused by cold weather concreting are cracking of the concrete and freezing, falling and collapsing of the structure. Cold weather concreting also causes more risks for work safety, the risk for work related errors is elevated when concreting in cold weather. The damages can be prevented by way of good pre-planning, methods of covering and with good after care.

The second part of this study describes how the theoretical part was implemented on the construction site. The last part describes the writers expertise and needs for development.
