The purpose of this thesis is to improve conditions for Finnwind Oy for execution of hybrid electricity production systems for Telecom-masts outside the power grid. This work examine the energy need for the devices of Telecom-masts, design self-sufficient and independent electricity production hardware. It also examines how different circumstances affect energy need of the masts considering the kinds of challenges in energy production systems. The thesis also determines facts and statistics that should be collected and managed with remote access and what sorts of error and maintenance alarms are needed to guarantee undisturbed activity of the crucial functions of Telecommasts.

Hybrid electricity production system enables the functioning of Telecom-masts outside the power grid by means of renewable energy sources instead of the current diesel generator. Hybrid system is achieved with solar and wind power and with backup power system to ensure continuous power supply. The basics of wind power in general and the suitability of the current product of Finnwind Oy compared to another supplier’s product to the hybrid system were studied. The solar power part of the hybrid system is being reviewed in the thesis Aurinkovoima osana hybridi-sähköntuotantojärjestelmää by Elis Keskinen. This thesis includes parts written in cooperation with him in chapters 2 and 5.

According to the results of this work it is reasonable to invest in hybrid system for Telecom-masts in targeted countries based on estimated 10 year lifecycle, exceeding the estimated payback time of five years. Follow-up of this work would be to determine potential customers and real sites for installing the hybrid system and therefore determining real payback time for the system in big scale marketing. Also the conditions for exploitation of wind energy as part of the hybrid system should be carefully researched at the site before dimensioning micro wind turbines in the system. In locations where there is good wind speed the micro wind turbines can effect positively the payback time.
