Over the past decade stretching has been a topic under vivid conversation. The objective of this study was to discuss the extent of mobility as a concept and to explore the relevance of stretching to mobility. The theoretical section explores structure of the muscle tissue, mobility, stretching methods, functional training and overhead squat as a screening method for athlete’s functional mobility. The purpose of this study was to produce the contents for a guide aimed for young athletes’ coaches. The material consists of guidelines on how to screen an athlete´s functional mobility.

The theoretical section indicates that mobility is a very broad concept and it should be considered as an individual feature. To ease muscle stiffness, stretching is a relevant part of an athlete’s training programme. Furthermore, preventive stretching should also be adopted to avoid the disorders characteristic to certain sport.

Further studies on the subject, for example a systematic literature view involving stretching methods, could yield important and interesting information and provide us with a better understanding of how to use different stretching methods effectively and functionally as a part of an athlete´s training.
