The purpose of our practical thesis was to organize a first aid training day for second year students of Kimpinen High school in Lappeenranta. We chose this subject because we are interested in acute care and first aid. We also had our own experiences that there is not enough lessons about first aid in high school. The ambition of our thesis was that the students felt that the first aid day we organized was useful for them.

We organized the first aid day on 6th February 2018 and hundred students were involved. Teaching lesson were kept for one class at a time. The lesson included a short PowerPoint presentation about cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, firstcare emergency bandage and unconscious patient. After the short theory part students trained in practice. Students gave us anonymous feedback about the day.

The practical thesis was success in our opinion and it also got lots of positive feedback from students. Feedback supported our experiences that there is not enough first aid lessons in high school. Along with positive feedback we saw in our own eyes that the students showed interest for what we were teaching them. The practical thesis supported our counselling and teaching skills which both are important and these both skills will be present daily when working as a nurse.
