Bugg has taken place in Finnish social dance field and is danced across Finland. Finnish Dance Sport Association and Lavatanssi Cup of Finland organize competitions of bugg. Bugg is relatively young, so, the history and development of bugg in Finland have not been studied, and therefore the knowledge on the subject is scanty. Thus, one of the motives was to create written knowledge on the history of bugg. Other motives were personal interest in bugg and the field diversity and related issues occupying the teachers’ and enthusiast’s mind.

The aim of this thesis was to find out the history, development, styles of bugg as well as the situation today and create a general view and so enhance my professional skills. Interviews and on-line questionnaires made for dance teachers and enthusiasts have been used as a study material in the thesis.

The education of bugg in Finland has started to spread in the 1990s but numerous areas have not been investigated. In this thesis different styles and their changes over time are presented but because bugg has so many different variants, it is really hard to give unambiguous answers. I hope that dance teachers and enthusiasts benefit from this thesis and would help everyone interested on understanding the variety of bugg and creating general picture.
