This thesis describes the process that took place before a solo performance was ready for the stage. During this process I was the actor, director, scriptwriter, stage designer and costume designer. The thesis specifically focusses on what I learned and achieved when working alone, which despite being one of my biggest difficulties, is where I gain my greatest insight. As a foundation for this work I use my artistic exam, literature focussing on the actors’ and the directors’ work, my diary during the process and the assessors’ feedback. My conclusions are that, on your own, it is possible to create and carry out a physical theatre performance that deals with large, abstract themes, such as, life, death and love. Working on your own is challenging and the supervisors’ work is important. Keeping a distance to yourself and your own efforts is a prerequisite in the creative process. What made the performance original was the fact that I created it solely on my own visions.
