The purpose of this thesis is to study how divorce affects children and how kindergarten teachers and family workers can support children in crisis. The main questions of the thesis is how small children reacts when their parents gets a divorce, how kindergarten and family work can support children of divorce and what cooperation there should be between preschool and family work.

The theoretical part is about what divorce means to children, children’s crisis management, children’s feelings and different methods that kindergarten teachers and family workers can use to support children and the whole family.

The study was done by qualitative interviews with one kindergarten teacher, one kindergarten teacher/director, one family worker and two project workers. The outcome showed that children react very differently when parents get a divorce depending on the child’s personality and that communication between parents has a big affect on the child. All the persons that we interviewed agreed on that there should be more support measures for divorced families and that cooperation between kindergarten, family support workers and social services is necessary to be able to support children in families with divorced parents in the best way possible.
