Käytetty hiekoitusmateriaali ja EEJ-menettely

The objectives of the thesis were to investigate the suitability of the used sanding material, which is classified as waste, for reuse in slip prevention. EoW means End-of-Waste and the purpose of the thesis was to find whether it is possible to end the waste classification of the used sanding material by the conditions of the law. The purpose was to learn about the quality of the used sanding material, such as technical properties and environmental suitability, which mainly determines suitability for reuse. In addition the study wanted to find secondary utilization purposes and the impacts of reuse as well as the economical cost-effectiveness of processing the used sanding material suitable for reuse.

The thesis was conducted by studying literature, organizing interviews and using practical experience. The theoretical part of the thesis describes, the life cycle of the sanding material and presents the legislation which regulates the further use of waste soil such as utilization and final disposal.

The thesis found how much sanding material is used annually and how much of the used sand can be restored for possible reuse. The information was used in the em-ployer’s report about sanding material. The results of the thesis suggest that the used sanding material could be reused again in the same purpose and there is a demand for the material but ending the classification of used sand as waste is complicated due to the deficiency and ambiguity of the legislation.

By reusing used sanding material the natural resources could be saved and emissions caused by the production of crushed stone could be reduced. It would be necessary to clarify legislation and official practices regarding the utilization of soil waste. Further study on the processing methods, technical properties and environmental quality of the used sanding material would be important, also when recovered sanding material is being used.
