This engineering thesis project was conducted to improve machine reliability on separating accelerometers from a leadframe. VTI Technologies Oy had two machines that separate the components. This project aims at improving the newer separator as the older machine doesn't have the capacity to meet the high capacity needs.

The project started with interviewing the machine operators and maintenance people. All the problems where listed and analyzed. Most of the problems had something to do with mechanics. The main part of this thesis was mostly the mechanical design of new parts to the machine. Mechanics where designed with Solidworks and the part machining was outsourced. Three problems where found that needed sensor changes and reprogramming of the machines logic.

Some of the new parts had to be approved by VTI Technologies Oy's customers as the parts had an effect on moving the components from the machine to an ESD-safe plastic tube.

This engineering thesis project is a design project. When the project started the idea was that the new parts had to be machined by the author itself, but as the project grew the machining of the parts was outsourced. That is because the finishing and tolerances had to be high as the parts were approved by customers from automotive industry. By outsourcing the future spare part needs are secured.

When this thesis is written all the designed parts are approved inside VTI Technologies Oy and their customers. The project continues after the parts are ready from machining. There are high hopes to get the reliability up by these small improvements.
