The purpose of this final year project was to study the differences between tunnel surveying and conventional construction surveying, and get to know tunnel construction and tunnel surveying. To reach the goal, a big tunnel construction site in Viikki, Helsinki was taken a deep look into.

The sources used in the final year project were earlier research and the enormous amount of experience certain tunnel surveying professionals posses. The survey in this project was done with a tacheometer because of its accuracy. Various computer programs and surveying methods used in tunnel surveying were also introduced in this bachelor thesis.

Tunnel surveying was more precisely looked into through the construction of the civil defense shelter and parking lot in Viikki, Helsinki. The aspects studied in the final year project were the creation of tunnel surveying points, the mapping and the consequent reporting, the way to carry out surveying while mining and drilling operations are in progress, and the analysis of the results.

In conclusion, it was established that once the surveyor knows the basics and is ready to learn more, surveying the underground is not difficult.
